Behind the designs.
Madder Cutch & Co is an independent textile studio founded by Nicola Cliffe in 2016, bringing together her background in chemistry with her love of drawing and pattern.
Working from her garden studio in Stamford, Nicola began exploring colour through plants and hand screen-printing her early designs onto linen.
Today, her observations of the natural world continue to inspire each design, from the first hand-drawn illustrations to the flowing repeat patterns. Her understanding of natural dyes informs a distinctive palette, with the colours of the printed linens carefully matched to the tones she develops from plants.

Lichen
Printed in Fenland brown. Drawn from the quiet intricacy of lichen.
This footstool is upholstered in Lichen, a design that builds gentle pattern through repetition and line. Printed in warm Fenland brown, it brings depth and structure to an otherwise neutral room.
Forest Floor
Fallen leaves. Filtered light. The woodland floor.
Forest Floor began with the leaves of an old oak tree close to my home. I was drawn to their soft edges and layered silhouettes. Printed in earth-led tones, the design carries the quiet colour and texture of the woods into interior spaces.
Seasonal Accents
Small changes. Considered shifts.
A room rarely needs redesigning, only adjusting. As the light changes, so can the layers within it. Replace lighter linens with deeper tones. Introduce a botanical lampshade. Reupholster a single piece in a richer cloth.

We hand print the book cloth using our natural dye colours and hand it over to The Stamford Notebook Company to do the rest.
Our notebooks are made from exceptional high quality British milled, off-white, smooth paper.

This rectangular shaped cushion (48cm x 28cm) is the perfect size for any chair. The cushion front is hand screen printed using our natural dye colours on to 100% linen. The envelope back is in natural linen with a strip of printed fabric to finish it off.

Small, considered workshops exploring plant dyes and hand screen-printing.
Hosted in my Stamford studio, these sessions offer a practical introduction to working with sustainably sourced plant dyes and natural pigments. Participants learn the principles behind the materials, alongside the techniques used within my own practice.
Rooted in both chemistry and craft, each workshop is designed to build understanding, not just produce results.
Suitable for artists, designers and curious beginners alike.
